Rishi Kapoor, one of India’s most loved film actors, best known for his romantic roles, has died. He was 67.

Kapoor was admitted to a Mumbai hospital on Wednesday. “He is suffering from cancer and he has some breathing problem, so he has been admitted to the hospital,” his brother Randhir told Indian media on Wednesday.

Kapoor was first diagnosed with cancer in 2018, and received treatment initially in the U.S., before returning to India late in 2019. He has been hospitalized in India several times since with a variety of complications.

Despite his health problems, Kapoor recently announced that he would co-star with Deepika Padukone in a remake of Hollywood hit “The Intern.” But his regular social media activity has gone quiet since the beginning of April.

AMC Theatres Refusing to Play Universal Movies in Wake of ‘Trolls World Tour’ Dispute
AMC Theatres has hit hard at Universal Pictures, announcing it will no longer play any of the studio’s films in the wake of NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell’s promise to use premium VOD while films are still in theaters.

Universal used the Pvod format to release “Trolls World Tour” on April 10 amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and widespread theater closures rather than wait for theaters to re-open — which is unlikely to occur until mid-summer. The studio revealed Tuesday that “Trolls World Tour” took in $100 million in premium VOD rentals in its first three weeks of play in North America, a result the will push film on the road to profitability.

“The results for ‘Trolls World Tour’ have exceeded our expectations and demonstrated the viability of Pvod,” Shell told the Wall Street Journal. “As soon as theaters reopen, we expect to release movies on both formats.”

Prior to the pandemic,

‘Now You See Me 3’ in the Works With ‘American Hustle’ Writer
Lionsgate has hired “American Hustle” scribe Eric Warren Singer to write “Now You See Me 3,” the latest installment in the franchise based on a fresh take by Singer.

The first two movies in the “Now You See Me” series have taken in $687 million worldwide cumulatively. The previous films starred Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, Dave Franco and Morgan Freeman, among others. No casting has been set yet for the third installment.

Singer’s take will introduce new characters into the world while also creating opportunities for the original cast to reprise their roles.

Jonathan Bayme and his company Theory 11 will serve as a magic consultant to the filmmakers.

Bobby Cohen and Alex Kurtzman of Secret Hideout are teaming up again to produce. Meredith Wieck and Aaron Edmonds will oversee the project for Lionsgate.

Universal’s ‘Trolls World Tour’ Earns Nearly $100 Million in First 3 Weeks of VOD Rentals

Universal’s ‘Trolls World Tour’ Earns Nearly $100 Million in First 3 Weeks of VOD Rentals
Universal’s gamble to bypass a theatrical release for “Trolls World Tour” and release it on demand instead appears to have paid off — big time. On Tuesday, the studio reported that the sequel to the 2016 animated hit has scored nearly 5 million rentals since its April 10 debut and earned close to $100 million in digital rental fees.

Trolls World Tour” has already produced $77 million in revenue, more than the original 2016 animated movie did for the studio, an individual with knowledge of the figures told TheWrap. The original, produced with a $125 million budget, grossed $153.7 million domestically and $346.9 million worldwide.

But unlike with theatrical grosses, which are split evenly with movie theaters, Universal retains roughly 80% of digital rental fees — which were set at a higher-than-usual level of $19.99 for “Trolls World Tour.”

Khan was previously diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumour in 2018 and underwent extensive treatment in London. He recovered well enough to shoot what would turn out to be his last film “Angrezi Medium,” the release of which was abruptly cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic in March.

On Tuesday, he was admitted into the intensive care unit of Mumbai’s Kokilaben hospital with a colon infection.

After a brief stint in television, Khan made his film debut with a cameo in 1988 with Mira Nair’s Oscar-nominated “Salaam Bombay.” He returned to Indian television for the next decade. He shot to global prominence playing the lead in Asif Kapadia’s BAFTA winner “The Warrior” in 2001.

‘Dave’ Finale Review: Season 1 Is Smart Enough to Want to Get Better, Even After Hitting It Big

‘Dave’ Finale Review: Season 1 Is Smart Enough to Want to Get Better, Even After Hitting It Big
[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for the “Dave” Season 1 finale, Episode 10, “Jail.”]

Flaws and all, “Dave” is exactly the kind of first season you hope to see from a burgeoning writer, producer, and actor like Dave Burd. Alongside co-creator Jeff Schaffer, the man behind Lil Dicky uses his first TV series to take big swings in content, perspective, and tone, pivoting from an episode about going viral by screaming “Somebody suck me!” (a la Jim Carrey in “The Mask”) to a half-hour dedicated to Dave’s hype man, GaTa (played by Gata), as he tries to honestly address his bipolar disorder. Not all the cuts connect, but when you don’t know how many at-bats you’ll get, you’ve got to take your shot.

So far, they’re paying off. “Dave” is pulling in astonishing viewership numbers thanks to the recently launched FX on Hulu venture, all but assuring more seasons of the Fxx original series are on the way. Better still,

China box office expected to decrease more than $4.2bn due to coronavirus
Speculation mounts that cinemas may reopen in June after the Chinese government’s “Two Meetings” take place in late May.

The China Film Administration (Cfa) has estimated that the country’s box office will decline by $4.2bn (RMB30bn) in 2020 due to the Covid-19 coronavirus, which would account for nearly half of the $9.2bn (RMB64bn) grossed in 2019.

During an online conference on Wednesday, the Cfa analysed the impact of the coronavirus on the Chinese film industry and discussed steps to reboot it when the virus is fully under control. China’s cinemas have been closed since January 23, wiping out

Amazon Prime has scooped French Svod rights to Matteo Garrone’s “Pinocchio” with Roberto Benigni which will be debut on the streamer in France on May 4.

The streaming service acquired “Pinocchio” from Jean Labadie’s distribution company Le Pacte, which had to cancel the film’s theatrical release on March 18 as cinemas shuttered on March 15 due to the coronavirus crisis.

Le Pacte had spent a large sum in P&a to promote the film on the heels of its world premiere out of competition at the Berlinale. The deal with Amazon Prime is believed to have covered those costs and was approved by right holders. Meanwhile, Le Pacte is still committed to releasing Jean-Paul Salomé’s “Mama Weed,” a crime comedy starring Isabelle Huppert, in theaters later this year.

The Half of It review – charming Netflix teen comedy takes on Cyrano

The Half of It review – charming Netflix teen comedy takes on Cyrano
A talented trio of young actors enliven a familiar yet engaging tale of a queer love triangle at high school

There’s a satisfying ease to Netflix high school comedy The Half of It, a charming twist on the Cyrano de Bergerac formula that deserves slightly more attention than most of the streamer’s other made-to-order sleepover pics. A teen market that had been underserved by studios has now been exhaustively cornered by the company but often without much care or inventiveness, a conveyor belt of content that prioritises quantity over quality. It’s refreshing then to see a film such as this emerge from the same production line, slickly ticking all the same boxes but with a noticeable uplift in enthusiasm, grafting its own identity on to the boilerplate format.
